Joining the Military
Know your options if you are considering military service after high school. Here are several suggested steps to help you make your decision:
ROTC is an elective curriculum taken along with required college classes. When enrolled in ROTC, students learn and develop leadership skills and prepare for a career as an officer in the U.S. Military. Along with leadership training, ROTC can help pay for college tuition also. Interested students should contact the specific college and service branch to see what programs may be available. Please see the UniversityHQ website for additional resources and information about ROTC.
Registration for Selective Service
"...it shall be the duty of every male citizen of the United States, and every other male person residing in the United States, who...is between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six, to present himself for and submit registration..." [Section 3(a), Military Selective Service Act]
Registration for selective service is the law, a civic duty, and ensures an equitable response system. Failure to register can limit a man's access to college loans, grants and work study; access to job training programs; millions of federal jobs, state and municipal jobs, and a growing number of contractor positions; and citizenship.
For more information and to learn about ways to register for selective service, please visit the official website of the Selective Service System at https://www.sss.gov/.
Congressional Academy Days (or "Service Academy Days")
Academy Days are sponsored by your local congressional offices. Their objective is to provide you with information regarding service academies' admissions processes, the congressional office's nomination process and often an opportunity to meet with service academy representatives. Contact your Wisconsin Senators and Congressional Representatives for more information.
