Research shows that today's young people will probably change careers from five to seven times during their working lives. Young people who have a broad range of experiences are better able to decide the areas in which they are interested and wish to explore in greater detail.
When determining a student's class schedule, several factors should be considered:
- Consider what student plans are after graduation from high school. Careful planning will help ensure that students meet all of the entrance requirements for a college, business, or technical college, or that they will have the proper skills that potential employers are seeking in their employees. Future plans should be realistic and flexible to allow for changes in interest and job availability.
- Class offerings also depend upon teacher recommendations, past achievements, prerequisites, career interests and standardized achievement test scores.
- It is extremely important that all young people get involved in extra-curricular student activities. These activities give students a chance to develop interests and skills, meet new people, learn cooperation and teamwork, promote positive and healthy self-esteem, and create memories that they will treasure long after they have graduated from high school. Research indicates that those students who get involved in extra-curricular activities will enjoy school more and will maintain, if not increase, their grade point average. We believe that the more students enjoy school, the better they will perform in all areas of their education.
